Electric Imp with I2C ATSHA204 doesn’t work

I was hoping to use the wonderful electric imp ($30) without one of their crazy expensive mother boards ($20). The required Atmel ATSHA204-TSU identification chip needed for correct operation, is not yet available anywhere; RS and Farnell don’t carry it, and Mouser does but has it backordered ’till the end of the year (and they charge €20 shipping). RS does however carry the two-wire variant (ATSHA204-SH) for about a Euro a piece, so I decided to give that a try before shelling out the same amount of money for the mother board.

After hooking everything up, I still get the same LED blinking sequence (green slow – red short) as I got from just powering the imp without any support circuit at all. I’m guessing it didn’t recognize the ID-chip and is still being rejected from imp’s cloud service for a lack of identification. I’m off ordering one of the boards anyway… Hope this saves someone else some trouble.
